The Oopar Mafia Night

What Is Mafia?

At its core, Mafia is a social deduction game—a fancy way of saying it’s all about reading people, making alliances, and figuring out who’s telling the truth. The game is best played with a group (the more, the merrier) and works great at parties, community events, or even a chill night with friends. The idea is simple: some people in the group are secretly the “Mafia,” working to eliminate everyone else, while the others are trying to figure out who the Mafia members are before it’s too late.

Setting Up the Game

  1. Choose a Moderator
The Moderator doesn’t play directly but runs the game, keeping track of who’s who, announcing eliminations, and guiding players through each round. They’re the only one who knows everyone’s roles and makes sure the game flows smoothly.
  2. Hand Out Roles
Write each role on slips of paper, fold them, and pass them out randomly. Players keep their roles secret!
    • Mafia: Usually, 2-3 players, depending on the group size. The Mafia members know each other and work together to eliminate the villagers one by one.
    • Villagers: These are the innocent bystanders trying to identify the Mafia members before they’re eliminated.
    • Detective: The Detective has a special ability to investigate one person per round to learn if they’re Mafia or not.
    • Doctor: The Doctor can protect one player per round from being eliminated, including themselves if they choose.

Game Flow: How to Play Mafia

Mafia has two main phases that repeat until one team wins: the Night Phase and the Day Phase.

Night Phase

  1. Everyone Closes Their Eyes
The Moderator says, “Everyone close your eyes.” This is when the sneaky business begins!
  2. Mafia Chooses a Target
The Moderator asks the Mafia to open their eyes. The Mafia silently agrees on one person to “eliminate” by pointing to them. Once they’ve chosen, the Mafia closes their eyes again.
  3. Detective Investigates
The Moderator asks the Detective to open their eyes. The Detective silently points to one person they suspect might be in the Mafia. The Moderator will nod “yes” if that person is Mafia or shake their head “no” if they’re a Villager. The Detective then closes their eyes.
  4. Doctor Saves a Life
The Moderator asks the Doctor to open their eyes and point to one person they want to protect. If the Mafia chose to eliminate the same person the Doctor protected, that person survives the night! The Doctor closes their eyes after choosing.
  5. End of the Night
The Moderator now tells everyone to open their eyes and announces if someone has been eliminated or if the Doctor saved them. If someone was eliminated, they’re out of the game and reveal their role. Now, it’s time for the Day Phase!

Day Phase

  1. Group Discussion and Accusations
Now, everyone’s awake and on high alert. Players discuss who they think might be in the Mafia based on what happened last night. This is the time for bluffing, defending, accusing, and debating. The Detective might give subtle hints about what they know, but they have to be careful not to make themselves an obvious target.
  2. Voting
After some discussion, the group votes to eliminate one person they think is in the Mafia. The player with the most votes is “eliminated” and reveals their role.
  3. Repeat
The game returns to the Night Phase, and the cycle continues. The villagers win if they eliminate all the Mafia members. The Mafia wins if they outnumber the villagers.

Key Roles and How to Play Them

Here’s a quick rundown of each role and how to play it:

  1. Mafia Member 🕶️
    • Goal: Work together to eliminate all the villagers without getting caught.
    • How to Play: Mafia members need to stay calm, blend in, and avoid looking suspicious. During the day, they should join discussions and pretend to figure out who the Mafia is, just like the villagers.
  2. Villager 👩‍🌾
    • Goal: Identify and eliminate all the Mafia members.
    • How to Play: Villagers have to use their instincts and watch for subtle clues in how people act. Are they being defensive? Too quiet? Too eager to accuse? Villagers also need to be careful—sometimes, their best allies could be the Mafia.
  3. Detective 🕵️‍♂️
    • Goal: Uncover who the Mafia members are without revealing their own identity.
    • How to Play: The Detective has to balance sharing clues without giving away their role too soon. They might subtly guide the group to vote for someone they know is Mafia without saying outright. If they reveal too much, they become an obvious Mafia target.
  4. Doctor 💉
    • Goal: Protect players, keeping key villagers (or themselves) alive as long as possible.
    • How to Play: The Doctor has to guess who the Mafia might target each night. They might protect someone who seems to be figuring things out (like the Detective), or they might protect themselves if they feel at risk.

Winning the Game

The game ends when one of these two conditions is met:

  • Villagers Win: All Mafia members have been identified and eliminated by the group.
  • Mafia Wins: The number of Mafia members equals or outnumbers the remaining villagers, giving them control of the game.

Why People Love Mafia

Mafia is all about mind games, friendships, and surprises. As people try to lie, deceive, and uncover the truth, you’ll start seeing sides of your friends you never knew existed! Whether you’re laughing at wild accusations or enjoying the suspense as players try to figure each other out, Mafia creates unforgettable memories. So, the next time you’re with a group of friends, try Mafia or even better join us at one of Oopar’s upcoming Mafia nights.
